Russell Motley
Russell Motley has been a broadcast journalism professor at Florida Memorial University (FMU) since 2011. In 2016, FMU awarded him the Faculty Service Award. That same year, the Student Government Association named him Advisor of Year for successfully guiding FMU’s student chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ-FMU).
In addition to his academic work, Mr. Motley is editor-in-chief of three local publications: Legacy Miami, Legacy South Florida, and MIA magazines, which are all independent inserts of the Miami Herald and the Sun-Sentinel. Before coming to Miami, Mr. Motley worked as a TV news anchor and reporter for the CBS/FOX duopoly in Jacksonville.
Mr. Motley received his bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Miami and his master’s degree in communication from Florida A&M University (FAMU). It was at FAMU that he realized his passion for teaching young people and preparing them for careers in journalism.
Mr. Motley was born and raised in St. Augustine, Florida. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the South Florida Black Journalists Association. He’s a Life Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters.
