MLK Day of Service
The Community Relations Board and Office of Community Relations, along with HOPE (Helping Others through Pro Bono Efforts-University of Miami Law School) held a day of service in honor of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Association for the Development of the Exceptional, Inc. (ADE). The day was composed of a carnival for the consumers of ADE, including a presentation in honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. which was presented by ADE clients. In addition, Jonathan D'Oleo performed Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream Speech”.
Film Presentation at Miami-Dade College
During the month of February, the Community Relations Board partnered with the Human Services Coalition (HSC) and Miami-Dade College, Wolfson Campus, to show the documentary Muhammad Ali: Made in Miami. The film depicts the life of Cassius Clay and the role that Miami had in making him the heavy-weight champion known as Muhammad Ali. Following the film, Dr. Gaspar Gonzalez, one of the film's producers, and Dr. Marvin Dunn, who starred in the film, joined CRB members for a discussion with the MDC students in attendance.
In September 2009, the Community Relations Board will hold several more film presentations, followed by group discussions, at colleges throughout the City of Miami. For specific dates, times, and locations, please contact the Office of Community Relations at 305-416-1035.
S.P.I.R.I.T. Workshops at Miami Edison Senior High School
The Community Relations Service for the U.S. Department of Justice held a SPIRIT (Student Problem Identification and Resolution of Issues Together) workshop at Miami Edison Senior High School on Monday, March 16, 2009 and Wednesday, March 18, 2009. The SPIRIT program is aimed at bringing students, teachers, administrators, and parents together by identifying issues and developing solutions. SPIRIT reduces racial tensions in schools, improves student/teacher relationships, and works to prevent violence and conflicts among students in school. The Community Relations Board and Office of Community Relations participated in this workshop by serving as facilitators opening up dialogue and widening communications between the groups.
